5. After The Thin Man (1939)
The second in the Thin Man series sees perenially-drunk master detective Nick (William Powell) and thrill-seeking wife Nora (Myrna Loy) on the hunt for the murderer of Nora's cousin's husband. It features some of the funniest scenes of the series, with Nick and Nora having to attend a family dinner party whilst stinko. James Stewart makes an appearance in a supporting role, and the script by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich is a wise-cracking joy.
There were four more Thin Mans to come, but they never bettered the first two.
Killer Line:
Nora (whilst packing in the next room): "Are you packing?"
Nick: "Yes dear, I'm just putting away this liquor"
